Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Now Has Rating Areas

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Colorado used to be the only company with one rate grid for the entire state of Colorado.  That’s not the case anymore now that they’ve released their rates for 2007.  Anthem’s number crunchers have come up with four sets of rates for Colorado, based on the cost of services, number of providers, etc. in various areas.  Every zipcode in the state has been assigned to one of the four areas, and health insurance rates will be based on zipcode as of January 2007.

The range in Anthem’s rates for the four areas is not as dramatic as price variance with some other companies.  The difference between the highest and lowest priced areas varies from about $12 for a member under 24, to about $35 for a 64 year-old member.  Most people won’t notice much of a difference, and will just get a rate increase letter in December, just like every year.  For brokers, this change makes us all the more thankful for the quoting software that has replaced the need for paper rate sheets over the last few years.
