My heart goes out to the family as well. As a wife and mother there is no greater pain than to see your children in pain. I don't think; however, that the answer is as 'simple' as turning healthcare over to the gov't to manage. Our gov't is often accused of many things, but efficiency is rarely one of them. Through gov't control/managed healthcare, I truly believe the cost of healthcare would increase and the quality would decrease. Today, we have programs that would insure more people through gov't funded means and many people still do not take advantage. The answer; unfortunately, is much more complicated than turning to Washington and saying "You do it." Until we realize that and look for more creative solutions, we'll continue to suffer and so will our children! By the way, should any treatment really cost $1 MILLION dollars a year?

[...] HB1355 is a very well intentioned bill. In a quick and easy attempt to fix problems like Nathan Wilkes’, legislators want to prohibit insurance companies from looking at a clients medical history. So in the case of Nathan, the insurance company wouldn’t be allowed to give the maximum possible rate increase of 10% to the whole group for a pre-existing condition of a member in the group. Simple right?
Heartbreaking story about this family. My heart really goes out to them. Sadly this country will never have a universal health care system the medical lobby is too powerful. But I guess as long as the corrupt government gets their health care the middle class will have to be satisfied. I really hope this family can find some solution.

Thanks very much for sharing that. I couldn't agree more about the current cause of our medical finance woes. Medicine should not be tied to Wall Street, Investment Bankers, shareholders, or any of that other nonsense that drives business interests.
