I agree with the points made here and would like to expand on one of them a step or two further. I am an RN and have discussed these exact issues with quite a few of the MD's I work with everyday. On the point made above about knowing what they were getting into re: hours, etc. when they decided on their career path, you are correct. However, most who went to medical school more than say 5 or 10 years ago, there was a greater reward for the work investment than there is today. Most have told me if they were getting ready for college today, they would seriously consider a different career path. Expand that thought out one more step and what you have are decreasing medical school enrollment resulting in hospitals beginning to have to impoort foreign trained MD's to fill vacancies. If this trend continues, we will then see a shortage of MD's in much the way there is an RN shortage today. This has already begun to happen in certain specialties and in rural areas. What will happen if single payer healthcare is enacted but there is not a doctor to go to? Most of the MD's I have had discussions with are of the opinion that there needs to be an overhaul of the private health insurance system, NOT a move to government sponsored, single-payer model. And being a nurse, I too am very fearful of these proposals. I have read HR 676 and have some serious reservations. See my blog post on the subject for my concerns.
