Grand Rounds
A somewhat Apple-biased Grand Rounds is up at Shrink Rap. It’s worth checking out just to see the ultra-cool graphic… an iPhone with nifty little icons for every post… The Colorado Health Insurance Insider post about hospitals and breastfeeding has a little icon of a breastfeeding baby!
I appreciated Mother Jones post about cell phones for kids and "bogus ADHD." I recognize that some kids really do have serious issues that require medical intervention, but I’m with Mother Jones – I think that most kids just need parents who are in charge and not trying to be their kids’ buddies. When we look at overutilization of medical services, behavioral medications for children are near the top of the list in my book. And yet it’s scarily prevalent these days… no wonder we’re spending so much money on health care.
Not Totally Rad has a fascinating article about "secret shopper" patients in hospitals – I knew that all sorts of businesses use this tactic for evaluating themselves, but I never thought of it being used in the medical world. The article brings up all sorts of interesting points… definitely a good read.
Interested Participant has a good article about health care in Canada, with numbers that show that a significant chunk of Canadians are without a PCP – just the same as their neighbors to the south. So does it matter whether we have national health care or private health insurance?
Six Until Me has a detailed post about getting health insurance coverage for durable medical equipment to manage diabetes. And it closes with some very well put words: "Make the investment in me now and I will be healthier. It costs less to manage diabetes than it does to manage diabetes complications." Very true.
